Of course it would be good for you to try Haleakala yourself!  I'd be
interested in hearing if there is a difference between the sites.  I keep
intending to go over to Hawaii, but somehow never have the time.  The last
time I was on Mauna Kea (and not for observing), Keck I construction had
not even started.

By the way, one more caveat -- though it has never caused a problem for
me, everyone should be aware that there are times when a green laser is
being fired upwards from the observatory area.  I'm guessing it's a
reference "star" for adaptive optics.  It's no more noticeable than the
laser pointers used at star parties but this is only because the
observatories are located on the next cinder cone summit.  It will
probably show up if you were photographing where the laser was pointing
since it does not move much for long periods.
