Re: [APML] OT: Hawaian trips; was: Orion Mosaic preview
Hi Burt,
I only took a camera and tripod, which as luck would have it was a good thing actually because it rained almost all the time we were there. But it was a wonderful 70°, day and night in Dec.
On the way to Kona from Hilo there is a well marked Road which turns South. It is the most southern point on the island and looks south toward 6000mi of Blue Pacific Ocean and no lights. If it is dry this could be very good. A day trip here is a good idea to find a spot, but you will be alone at night. From Hilo this trip will take two hours,WARNING; D O N O T S P E E D!! They use FLEAR Radar every day and night.
Don't miss understand, as you know nothing beats elevation, and this southwestern part of the island is dryer than a lot of other areas. The Kona westside is dry.
As far as I know the Okazunna (SP)Platform is open and has a big telescope on site and people go there at night and It is COLD!!!!Go prepared if you plan to go up the Mountain They have a snack bar there, and lights, hot chocolate etc, and lights.........Usually the hotels supply coats etc. for their guest who go up.
Any way I have rambled on long enough. I hope you are going for a month or two. Enjoy your trip, get some rest, LOL take in some of those Hawaiian Photons.
Ray
