RE: [APML] Orion Mosaic preview

Hi Chris,

It's a shame that I had not realized how good the sky condition
here is for three years of stay in Hawaii. I'm so used to
stay in the observatories and take deep, subarcsec resolution
images without appreciating it.

Since 2003, I started to take amateur astrophotos here. Only
after I compare the Mauna Kea results with those I got in Taiwan
several years ago (with exactly the same telescope and E100S), I
realize the sky here is really dark. This Orion mosaic (as an
example), is so deep that the faintest nebula I can get is limited
by the correction of the vignetting pattern, not by the background
noise, nor by the film grain. And this is with an ASA100 film and
an exp time of only 90min. Very hard to believe!

I guess I'm not the first person to realize this. Now many
Japanese amateur astrophotographers come to Hawaii to take pictures,
in a monthly basis. There is even a Japanese telescope shop
renting telescopes (10" RC, 5" flat-field APO, etc) to Japanese
astrophotographers on the Maui Island. I also heard that a CCD
amateur astrophotographer from mainland US came to Hawaii frequently.
I don't know the light polution situation in other states. But if
it is a problem and if you don't mind flying around, come to Hawaii.
Many people are doing so already. I will be very happy to give
you some directions.

Cheers,

Wei-Hao
