Chris:
I know this question was asked some time ago and someone may have answered
it, but........this series (400, 600, 800, 1200mm) of long Nikon lenses is
1970's technology or Pre-ED glass technology. They were excellent cutting edge
optics for their time, but were replaced with the introduction of ED glass in the
1980's. If you were to compare the lens you asked about with it's newer ED
version, the difference in sharpenss is immediately apparent.
