I'm thinking (hoping) it must be the density of this slide. Other non-astonomical images work fine - both from slides and negatives. The image is very dense - so if this type of result could be explained by an overly dense image that's a good possibility. If need be I'll get a new scanner but I'll just monitor this one and see what develops in the short term.
