[APML] Wide-field view of M31 and Comet Encke
Hello all,
Here is a link for a piggy-backed image of the Andromeda Galaxy taken starting around 9:30 pm the night of 25 October 2003 from just south of Inyokern, CA. The rest of the details are given under the photo. If you can recall, Comet Encke was within 10 degrees of M31 that evening.

Of course, I planned on getting both in the shot...thinking it would look very nice. I spent about two evenings searching the original slide and scan for the comet, which was just passing magnitude 10.0 that night and getting brighter. To put it bluntly, I didn't find jack....I can only assume the comet was too faint and smeared too much across the film for it to show up. If it had shown up, I believe it would have been as large as the core of the galaxy.
Nevertheless, Comet Encke *is* in there! You just can't see it...
Maybe next time. =)
