Gary, I've found that ImagesPlus is the best way to
remove gradients, using the background compensation
feature.  I applied a planar gradient mask to your
image and tweaked it a bit in Photoshop CS:

By the way- nice image (let me know when I can remove
it from my site).

Also- does anyone have ideas about my previous post
from a day or two ago, regarding how to directly open
images in Photoshop from Internet Explorer using the
File menu?  I used to be able to do this, but somehow
the option of "edit with Photoshop" was lost after I
converted over to Photoshop CS.
