I use the patterson and the reel is plastic too...
It was and is a pain to use.
What seems to help is prior to loading the film, cut
the corners slightly on the film then try to feed it
through, then the edges dont get caught that much.

Still, a full roll is nearly impossible for me.
Once I got lucky and I was able to push the film all
the way through.
