 That's a real nice shot. I am beginning to think what we have is is a
galactic dust lane. Matt's widefield shot shows it the best.

Hello Loke,
I found an old version of my processing of the image referred below.  I do
think there is a different population of stars, either in composition or in
density or both.  The gradient may not be as apparent as it is on your
image, but I may have played with this a lot to remove it.  I do remember it
being there.  I thought it looked as though there were two dark lobes off of
the top end of the nebula with the middle being a little brighter.
Interesting observation.  Looking forward to more.  Here is the link, file
