[Astro-photo] Compositing 2 different exposures in PS

I'm back to where I was before PS turned magenta. At that point I was
following Jerry's article and had gotten to step 5. The article is

Things went wrong when I tried to 'Load selection'. Don't ask me why.
I'd like to believe that it's because the article is based on an older
PS version (4.0?) while I'm using 5.5. But a more likely scenario is
that I'm incompetent at this.

Do any of you have any advice when following this procedure?
