RE: [APML] Excellent deep sky sites in Western Australia

Joachim,

Do you mind if I tag along? I've had enough of the cold, wet, cloudy
climate also!!

Seriously, Perth is a wonderful city and I'm sure you will love both the
city and the surrounding areas.
My fiancé worked in Perth for one month last year and I went visiting
her during the stay. Kings Park, Cottesloe Beach and Fremantle bring
back lots of good memories. Before I went to Perth I contacted the
Astronomical Society of Western Australia (ASWA)
http://wwwtlc1.murdoch.edu.au/gen/aswa/
and got in touch with their President Valerie Semmler. She was most
helpful making my stay a memorable one. She put me in contact with
Trevor Keates of the Pingelly Heights Observatory
http://www.westnet.com.au/astroventures/
, which I rented for a couple of nights. She even took me and my
girlfriend out observing one evening. I'm sure she can recommend some
excellent observing sites. Drop me an email privately if you are
interested in receiving her email address.

Here are a few shots I took from Kings Park and from the Pingelly
Heights Observatory while down there:

This was our first trip to Australia and we both loved it so much that
we went back on a 4 weeks holiday at the end of last year, this time
exploring South Australia, Northern Territory and New South Wales. We of
course also went to see the Total Solar Eclipse:

Subject: [APML] Excellent deep sky sites in Western Australia

Hi all,

Finally it's all set - I'm leaving the cold, gray and wet skies of
Norway and move to Perth in February!! I'm SOOoo excited and really look
forward to finally get frequent clear skies (hopefully!). Regarding
this, I'm wondering if some of you are familiar with this region, and
know of any superb deep sky astro sites. I know (or heard) that WA and
the Perth area is excellent whatsoever, but where could one go to get
the absolutely BEST of the best?! (especially during the southern winter
time)
I recon I'll be able to travel within a radius of 600km, from
Perth, quite easily (in a long weekend).
Any suggestions?!
I'll ofcourse contact the local astro club when I get there and talk
with them about this, but I'm so eager to know right now ;-)

Cheers!
Joachim Plocinski
