Re: [APML] New Rosette Mosaic
Bobby (& Rob):
Two magnificent works, both yours and Robs definitely go in two
directions, and for me to elaborate on their differences would take a
while. I've got to revisit each several more times to wring out
what things were important to each in both large and small
elements.
I can't believe the star size and range of contrasts in your film
version. It flies in the face of what I would expect when compared to
Rob's excellent version using a similar aperature. Rob's value scale
seems wider and towards the higher end, whereas yours is quieter and
underscores the darker areas and details. The dark globules ("tears")
around what I'd characterize as the skull's orbits contrast
well with their immediate field, and the way you've controlled that
field to appear either closer or farther away, is masterful.
For the Rosette, I look for a range in reds, from cadmium to alizerin.
While Rob's appears to show cad red nearest the large red star at the
tunnel, yours shows a cooler hue. What is unexpected, is your cad red
shows on the opposite side of the tunnel, away from the red stars.
Details within details seem to be a CCD characteristic, until now.
What seems astonishing with yours is the strength of statement from a
suposedly dying medium. I've grown to accept the ever smaller
applicabilities of film for astro work, which has tended to push me to
ever widening fields. Your Rosette has me rethinking the matter.
