Tony,
as I described several weeks ago, I found that the Minolta Multi Pro produces
very strong rainbow- like ghosts and artifacts near bright stars, when scanning
slides with a somewhat dark background.
You can see some raw scans and other examples here:
http://www.mfelsch.de/ghosts/ghostartif.html
Our local astro- club, who was owner of the scanner, returned it to Minolta Germany;
we finally received a modified unit from Japan, (they put a coated glass in front of the
ccd replacing an uncoated one (!), so they told us.
Now the artifacts were very much reduced (by 95%), so that I really could live with them (normally a
slide doesn't have a completely dark background);
Unfortunately the second unit had a second, different flaw: in certain regions of the
scan the three colour channels were not in register
(so the stars consisted of three little points, blue, red, green, side by side.....).
This problem occured randomly, but in 80% of all scans.
We gave the device back to Minolta and at the moment we are trying to make up our minds
whether we make them refund the money or fix the scanner.... if this is possible.
The new software is said to be designed to give control about all the parameters, but as I read on the
MultiPro- mailing list, with colour negatives there is still clipping.... what I could not
verify myself, because we returned the scanner...
With the old software it was impossible to make a satisfying scan from a negative...
everybody used vuescan for this purpose. I did not even succed with vuescan, but
I did not try really hard, because at the moment I mainly have slides to scan.
