M31 is tipped 12 degrees from edge on. I suppose the image
would need to be rendered 3D and then rotated. Not sure how
to do that <G>.
 
I'm not too concerned about 3-D modeling...too complex for this initial attempt at digitally stretching M31.
 
12 deg. from edge on is 90-12 = 78 deg. tipped from 'square on'  The cosine of 78 is 0.208...  If you shrink the image of the galaxy only along its widest axis to 21% its original size...or expand the short axis by 1/0.21 which is multiplying it by 4.8 in length...then you should get a first approximation of a face on view...ignoring the 3-D/perspective/distortion problems.
