A RIP (I don't remember what it
stands for... something like "raster image processing...) is the software that
takes your RGB PS file and converts it to CMYK in a form that the printer can
recognize... this is really important (and why you will have problems with cheap
desk tops) because it creates a foundation between what you see on the monitor
and what you hopefully get as a print. I have a pretty basic RIP but it works
well enough on non-critical subject matter to give me WYSIWYG results. On
critical things I usually will make a copy of the file and make a test
strip.
