Chris: I don't think it is reasonable to reply to the list with such short 
ditties as:
"Nice pic"
"Good work"
etc.

If someone posts that they have a new image, it is probably better to send 
them a private AttaBoy rather than fill up the list with these kind of replies.

UNLESS:
you are going to make a comment that will spur some sort of discussion.
I think this has been mentioned before ....

And of course, I'd agree with you that one should reply to the commenter 
one way or the other, either privately or on the list, depending on the 
nature of the response.
