Re: [APML] Why this discussion?? WAS The End of Tech Pan???

I'd like to weigh in here now that I caught up on this thread. I am not in the
upper ranks here, but I have been involved in AP for awhile....I am somewhat a
creature of techie and fiddling, and like reading of new technology..

I believe we are on the cusp of a revolution in AP imaging....look at what SBIG
is doing to the ST-7E pricing...brand new on sale for $2,400...why? because when
they release the USB versions no one will want parallel. Finger lakes MaxCam are
USB or Ethernet.....for those like me, I will not need a laptop...I can image
right from my basement desktop with an ethernet or USB line run the 100ft. out
to my scope....also, when you go digital, some of you will not need to lug your
stuff to a dark site....look what Bob G. does from his driveway and Mag. 4.5
skies....How would you like to be able to get the same pics you get now from 100
ft. away, instead of a 20 or 60 mile drive?

I think within 5-8 years film AP will be almost be extinct, or ever so rare, not
just becasue of our migration, but also because suitable film will just
disappear, but also I think an ST-10 class of camera and chip will be under
$3,000, if not even less then that...and be USB or ethernet interface....Bob is
a fantastic addition to this list, not only becasue of his skill and comparison
shots we can make to CCD, but also becasue he has (given me) tips that are
transportable between techniques... ...and as more and more on this list will be
migrating to digital, this list will evolve accordingly....those here are the
single group of the best in this endeavor....

I do all film now, I have not used my 216XT for a picture in years...only
autoguiding (mainly becasue I need another camera to guide) But i also realize
that my skies are getting worse, and the only way to get them back is to travel
(not likely) or move to CCD...as already said ....it's just a matter of time and
money.

off the soapbox..
