RE: [APML] Texas Star Party-Bad Moon Week??
Kent,
It is hard to tell why the organizers chose that weekend but I bet it had
more to do with the Ranch activities and other events happening at Fort
Davis. Believe it or not but Fort Davis is a huge tourist town. There are
events booked for almost every weekend from May to Sept. Most people prefer
the spring due to the cooler weather than late summer.
The prude ranch books up rapidly and is the place of choice for RV'ers etc.
The star party is probably bucking heads with the huge bike ralleys,
marathons, etc.

Subject: [APML] Texas Star Party-Bad Moon Week??
To APMLer's:
To those interested in attending the Texas Star Party, May 5-12, 2002, in
the
Davis Mountains of West Texas to do astrophotography or imaging:
The organizers have once again (last year too) picked the wrong week.
Last Quarter is May 4 and New Moon is May 12, meaning there will be a moon
in
the morning sky all week.
At the TSP, from sunset until about 1 am, the Spring Sky and Galaxies
prevail, but after midnight, the Summer Sky rises in the East. For
photography purposes, this morning sky is the main reason to attend TSP, but
this year, as last, the moon will be in attendance too.
I think the organizers think everyone will go to the lectures and out to
observe until midnight, then go to bed. Why would anyone go to a distant
star
party with incredible skies and go to be at midnight???????? Go figure.
