One concern with the SprintScan 4000 is that it's from Polaroid, a company that is in very deep trouble these days. I've been thinking of replacing my HP PhotoSmart scanner, and while the SprintScan's technical specs are impressive, I'm worried about getting support for it in the future. And, given Polaroid's finances, I don't have a lot of confidence that I'd ever collect on the $200 manufacturer rebate.

I saw someone make the claim that the Microtek Artixscan 4000t has the same internal hardware as the SprintScan. I've also considered the Kodak RFS 3600, which has slightly less resolution (3600 vs. 4000) but slightly more dynamic range (3.6 vs. 3.4). Both of these are priced similarly to the SprintScan (not counting the $200 rebate).
