There is a lot of equipment made for amateur stronomy that is a
"sideline". Spiders are not the primary product of ProtoStar, although
argueably thiers are the best available to ATMs. Sirius Optics, the people
who make all these new filters, are a commmercial/Industrial coating
company that happens to have an avid amateur astronomer as one of the three
parteners. Even in our case, the custom made mirror cells we sell and make
are a sideline for Dave (the guy who makes them), most of his living money
comes from custom maching jobs for heavy industry.
I think if you looked around, you could probally find even more
examples.
