[APML] Filter wheels

I know that filter wheels are common with CD work.
Are they used with film also?
How big must the filter be to not block the light
to 35mm film, at prime focus? 48mm? I suppose
that depends on the distance from the film plane.
What distance is best?

Even if this is a dumb question, I'd be grateful
for a serious reply.
