RE: [APML] C8 dlx vs. GM-8

Mark,

I had to make a similar analysis in choosing between the GM-8 and G-11 a
couple of years ago. I ultimately went with the G-11 for the 60 lb
capacity. It's the same base diameter as the GM-8, and since your putting
it on a permanent pier, portability and the extra weight isn't an issue.
There are also more plates, rings, etc. available for the G-11, and while
you can get a G-11 saddle for the GM-8, you burn up part of that 30 lbs in
doing so. Likewise, if you get a different scope, or want to mount a
heavier combination of gear later on, the G-11 will be more versatile.

Don't underestimate the weight of rings, plates, and piggyback
cameras/lenses - my OTA is only 16 lbs or so, but with rings, guidescope,
plates (including the SBS), and piggyback cameras, my setup has over 40 lbs
of gear. I know it's something like 35% more expensive than the GM-8, but I
personally think it's a better value because of the higher capacity.
