Thanks to advice from Herm <hermperez>, I found excellent
information and advice about the Photosmart S20 scanner at:

This guy has written a utility which sems to allow access to
hidden features of the Photosmart S20 scanner software,
like 16 bit output... (probably 12 ~significant~ bits, but
better than the standard 8 bits).
