The Photosmart printer DOES use black ink as one of the six 'colors' it uses to print
with. Yes, it would be extremely expensive to use it for text on a day to day
basis. It is made to primarily to print photographs along with a small amount of text
for notecards, calendars, etc. Very nice output on glossy Photosmart paper.
It also makes nice prints on the Matte Photosmart paper. I have no experience with the
other printers you mentioned. I bought the Photosmart scanner and
printer for photographic use only. My old Deskjet 500C is for day to day text hardcopy.
