Can you get with a friend or two that know how to read schematics?
Maybe they would be interested in the project too. . .as a way to
learn some motion control concepts - if they aren't interested in
astrophotography.

Probably yes, but if you search for surplus electronics catalogs you
can save $$ too. Look in the back of hobby/electronics/radio
magazines for various compaines: Brigar, C&H Sales, Jameco, Digikey,
Allparts, etc.
