A properly designed Newtonian can work fine with a guide scope,
particularly a smaller one such as what you have in mind. As I mentioned
in another message, I used to use my 8" f/4 Schmidt-Newtonian with
external guide scopes and it worked fine. Keeping it rigid enough for
external guiding becomes harder and harder as the scope becomes larger,
however.
