[APML]: Byers drive problems

I need some help with a drive problem. It is a Byers 7.5" drive on a
1.25" shaft Cave mounting with a 7" f/9 refractor. The problem is that
the clutch does not seem to be working. No matter how tight the clutch
plate screws are tightened, the scope still does not track well. If you
actually press the clutch plates together by hand, the scope will track
fine. It seems to me that the material that is used between the plates
is just too slick and it does not provide enough sticktion. It looks
like either nylon or teflon.

Would replacing that material with cork or leather solve the problem?
What could be wrong here? All else with the mounting is perfect--this is
driving me nuts! Help!
