Depends on what you mean by serious. I'm not using thick
paper, but I've had great results with my Epson Stylus Color 800 when
using the Epson Photo Inkjet paper (which is pretty inexpensive at about
$13 for 100 sheets; there are other paper options, but I haven't
tried them since they cost a lot more) and printing at 1440x720dpi.

I'm not too familiar with the PhotoSmart printer, but if this printer
is for general use you probably want to consider some things that
may not be too important for astro work, such as:
* pages per minute (for regular monochrome and also for color printing)...
my printer does 8 PPM in mono mode and up to 7 PPM in color
(although nowhere close to that at 1440x720).
* whether the ink is in separate cartridges. This is of course
nice for general printing, since you'll probably go through
the black cartridge much faster than the CMY cartridge.
