The adaptor has glass in it and seems to work fine with my other lens 24mm &
50mm
Must be the rear element limitation of this particular lens??

Hi Dan,
As an EOS (film) camera owner I am aware of these adapters, but they
normally need to have a mild built-in teleconverter (about 1.26x) to get
infinity focus. If you only got a plain piece-of-metal ring, it can't
reach infinity. If there is glass in your adapter and it still doesn't
reach infinity, something is wrong and I'd ask for a refund. There are
also physical limitations with the rear elements on some FD lenses,
which mean that they cannot be used with any such adaptor.
As for mechanically hacking the lens, you might be much better off
asking this question in another forum dedicated to Canon stuff or photo
gear in general. E.g here are threads from photo.net:
