RE: [APML] need suggestions on how to use a reducer with a Taurus TIII
Hey Alan,
Is the objective lens assembly removeable from the tube of the 102? What I'm thinking is that you could construct or find a shorter telescope tube (barrel) and put the objective lens assembly on this shorter barrel. Copy the back-end threads or whatever so that you can attach your equipment to it, and that would do the trick I think. It would require some thought as to what length of tube to make and careful work to duplicate the attachment points of the 102's barrel. You also have to maintain perpendicularity and concentricity requirements...it'd be a job for a machine shop (note I'm not referring to the type that planes cylinder heads) and would cost you a few bucks, but it'd be quite a bit cheaper than moving to the 106. If you knew an engineer or draftsman who could put together drawings for the machinist (or if you could do it yourself), then that'd be ideal. You also wouldn't have to worry about breaking up the stock telescope tube. It would be a nice little custom project.
Hope this helps,
Jason

Subject: [APML] need suggestions on how to use a reducer with a Taurus T
III
Hey all,
Sorry for the double post, I know a few will get this twice. I wanted
to also query the folks on the new ccd-uncensored list because there
are some engineering types there who may have come across this problem.
I'll try to give you as much pertinent info as I can, keep in mind that
for a variety of reasons, I am not going to go to a side by side
system.
What I have is a Tak FS-102 on a G-11/Gemini. Extremely nice combo that
compliment each other nicely. I made the decision to use an OAG here,
and I love it. With my background of using a Taurus at 3000mm, it was a
no-brainer. However, there is one limitation; I cannot use a reducer as
there is not enough infocus. I tried the Taurus reducer, then the Tak
reducer with the same results. Even racked in all the way, Vega was
still 2-4 EP fields wide and barely visible.
Eventually, I have to make a decision; keep what I have, or move to a
FSQ-106. I like this scope and feel that there is still plenty for me
to do with it.
I use a Feldstein adapter to mount the Taurus assembly to the Tak's
focuser.
There you have it, anyone ever overcome this problem?
Thanks,
Alan
