Hi all,
first of all let me say that I don't know what are the needs for
astrophotography.
I'm in this list only lurking, waiting for some pics to see... and I
like them  all, you ships so many good pics... thanks!

As of the topic, I personally use the GIMP, for all my photographic
needs. I own a conon 300D.
The best thing about it (other that it's free and it has nothing to
envy to PS, at least in pictures manipulation) is that it can be
extended by anyone has the ability, with filter and script and
plug-in.
it also can use any plug-in for photoshop.

What I'm saying is that maybe someone out there has already started to
write some plug-in for the gimp to solve your problems.
If not you (since you are a LOT of people) may be the incipit to create it.
You don't need to know how to program, the most difficult thing is not
to program a plug-in, it is to *know* what it needs to do.
And an astrophotographer is the only one who knows what an
astrophotographer need, right?

I suggest you search on freashmeat / sourceforce/ ... for some project
already started, and in case there isn't any,  you may start it,
trying to gather some human forces to do it. I believe it can work...

Obviously it's not a matter of days, but at the end you will have the
best software it may exist, the one which work the way YOU need.
