Yes, it's a good test of patience but I've just gotten used to dropping it off after the monthly new moon shooting season has closed. That or using print films. Hence the reason I'm putting a darkroom together. :)
I've taken film with me when we visit my in-laws down in San Diego and dropped them off at some of the better one-hour photo stores down there (one of them is in Little Italy), but their quality didn't impress me at all. And Wal-Mart processing costs like $4. It's great if you're willing to wait.

A week and a half to get slide film back?!!! I guess I'm spoiled living
in the big city (Tucson). Normal turnaround at Photographic Works is 3
hours - I drop it off on the way to work and pick it up at lunch...
Normally about $8/roll with push processing.
