I'm a notoriously non-technical kind of guy who likes to fly by the
seat of his pants sometimes. So, you may just want to completely ignore
this but what I do on many targets is to just try to put the 'smaller
picture' on a 'bigger picture'. I'd maybe look at a Sky Atlas 2000
chart and depending on what I wanted to try to include in the shot,
make sure the long axis of my camera was aligned a certain way. For
instance, when I was trying to figure out how to shoot M81 and M82, I
noted the central coordinate then made sure I looked to see what camera
orientation would be best to include both galaxies. IIRC, it was quite
easy, with the long camera axis simply pointing towards Polaris. On M42
and NGC1977, the long axis runs toward the central belt star. The HH
region runs toward Bellatrix(?). Make any sense?

Hope it helps,
Alan
