You have run into the 2 gig per process limit of win32. IIRC some 
windows server versions (winXP pro sever) can extend this limit by 
setting a switch in the boot ini file,so it may be worth investigating.


Linux has no per process memory limit AFAIK.  You might might to install 
linux on a spare partition and then use the GIMP to access all your RAM. 
There was a version of Corel Photopaint 9 that was ported to Linux as 
well.  Depending on the size of your images and the tasks involved it 
might be significantly faster to pre-process them with the GIMP and then 
boot to WinXP to finish off with Photoshop.
