Re: [APML] OT: Homemade Enlargers

Hi Brian

Way back when I was 16 I used a slide projector instead of an enlarger.
It is OK if you are a young kid trying to make prints for the first
time. Exposure durations were in the order of 1/2 to 1 second, the light
leakage from the enlarger reduces the overall contrast of the image,
precision focusing is a pig to achieve, unless you use gepe glass slide
mounts your negatives will warp while you are focusing. And a host of
other problems that make the money savings (assuming you have the
projector) insignificant compared to the end result.
Just keep your eyes peeled on e-bay, local flea markets, garage sales,
estate sales, APers who have gone to the dark side and want to wash
their hands of fixer stains <BG>, and with a bit of patience an enlarger
will appear that is within a meagre budget. And no matter how cheap and
nasty it is, it will produce much better results than the slide
projector.
Your other choice would be to cobble one together out of an old pentax
(the reason for pentax is that there are many pentax screw mount
accesories being dumped) 35mm camera with an extension bellows and a
light source at the back. As money is available replace the camera lens
with something like an El-Nikor or El-Omegar lens.
