RE: [APML] Blending, compositing in PWPro

Hello Alan,
You probably need to look at the situation in two different ways. The first
objective is going to be to minimize grain and maximize your signal. To do
this, you want to find the right balance of combining the longer exposures
so that you don't minimize the deepest exposure you have, yet minimize the
grain by adding some portion of the shorter exposures. My guess is that you
would be looking at adding the 100 and 40 minutes exposures to do this. I
would consider the 20 minute and under exposures good exposures for the
second objective and that would be to mask the inner core of M42 to reveal
more dynamic range in the object. Please see Jerry L.'s excellent tips on
how to use masks to achieve this. I am thinking that you may find each of
those short exposures useful in masking some portion of the burned out core
in your deep combination of the 100 and 40 minute. That is how I would
approach the process.

So I would register all shots. I would combine the 40 and 100 with a
heavier weighting on the 100 minutes. Here you find a balance between
signal and grain in your stack. You might try to combine the shorter ones.
I think you have more control if you register the shorter exposures with
PWPro and then mask the appropriate exposure over the burned core via Jerry
L. directions. They are so comprehensive, I could even follow them. Best
wishes on your processing. Share your results when you get a chance.

Subject: [APML] Blending, compositing in PWPro

Hi all,

I've got the following to stack in PWPro of M42: 40 sec, 5 min, 20 min,
40 min, and a 100 min shot. It's my understanding that I should blend 2
together, blend another 2 together amd then blend the two resulting
stacks. Is that right? If I want to add the fifth, what's the best way
to include that? I have other exposures I can throw in to the mix, 90
sec and 10 minute shots. And is there a preferred way to combine them
say keep the short shots together, or should I start by mixing short
and long ones together?

Hope I haven't confused anyone.

Thanks,
Alan
