RE: [APML] Small-scope mount advice needed
Hi, Alan,
You and I have chased around this subject but I guess I never told you
exactly what I knew. I asked Larry Myers before buying my MI-250 GOTO if
Meade AGs would work with his mount. He actually didn't know because no one
had ever asked. He consulted the maker of the drives on his mounts and came
back with a "yes". As I think you know, I haven't tried it; I've only used
my STV. If I ever find the time I might try it but the way things are going
this season I wouldn't bet on anything. Bottom line: write to Larry at
<larry@mountaininstruments.com> telling him that you're thinking of buying a
used MI-250 (non-GOTO) and that you would like to know if a 208-XT will
work. Larry's a really nice guy. He won't bite. ;)
Regards,
Greg

Hi Alan--I'm certain that these mounts will work with a Meade autoguider,
but there are better counterweights available!
:^}
Seriously, I can't think of an electrical reason why the MI-250 wouldn't
work with a Meade autoguider. You could pose the question on the MI-250
users group. Larry Meyers actively participates in the group, and I'm sure
a definite answer would show up quickly. By the way--fellow APMLer
Jim Ives uses a MI-250 mount on his Meade tripod with great success.
Before you decide to go with a GM-8 or G-11, you might want to check out one
of the several web pages dedicated to describing the tweaks needed
to make them work optimally.
Portability and stability tend to be mutually exclusive. If your future
plans include support for a 5 inch apo, the mount you buy probably wont be
one you
would want to drag along on your trip to Tahiti--unless of course you are
going by boat.
In that case you definitely should take along the Meade autoguider--for use
with your fishing gear!
Steve
