The sRGB color space was designed to provide for the display of images over
a broad array of differing computer monitors (such as web display). sRGB
has a much narrower color gamut (range of colors available) than a color
space such as Adobe 1998. If I remember correctly, sRGB is about 30%
"narrower" than Adobe 1998.
Your image file may contain this 30% additional color information if you
originally create the image in a wider gamut space like Adobe 1998. Even
though the additional color range may not display on your monitor, you can
see the difference in, say, an inkjet print, which displays more color
variations.
My workflow practice is to scan/create original image files in the Adobe
1998 color space (wider gamut). When preparing images for web display, I
first convert them to sRGB (narrower gamut for computer monitor display),
than downsize them to JPEG.
I believe it to be a better practice to work from files with more
information down to ones with less information, rather than the converse.
Same thing goes for print sizing, etc.
Take care,
Scott
