Part of the reason that all your scans are coming
out looking "grainy" is because in the "negative" mode the software in the
scanner has to create a profile in order to deal with the orange mask... so
before you even begin to work with it, the scanner has made up its mind about
internal contrast settings... Nikon has been the worst about this in the past,
making their scanners difficult to work with for astro purposes. This is why in
the " thinner" negatives you see more "grain"... it's really not grain, but more
like noise created by the internal software to deal with what it thinks is a
blank piece of film. The answer is to find a scanner like the SS120 with
software that allows for a truly "raw" scan... I have tried making scans with
the "negative" setting and the "raw" setting and the end results are
substantially different.
