My observations are very similar to yours. When scanning negatives (e.g. 
Royal Gold 400) with my Minolta Scan Dual II I always get a lot of grain. 
This is worse when the negative is not exposed to the sky limit. The higher 
the density of the negative the better the results. Best results I get with 
slide film.
