I can
highly recommend the Epson 1280 and Epson 2000P printers. I have used each
generation of Epson photographic printers, starting with the
1200.
The
output from these printers is stunning. It is also archival. The
orange shift issues with the older 1270 have been solved for some time now
(paper/ink combo); that's old news at this point. These printers are, of
course, 6 color.
Downsides:
1) the
2000P is S...L...O...W. The 1280 is better, but no road
runner. If speed is more important than quality, forget it. If
highest photo quality is your main issue, and you can watch TV while you print
or something, you will be a happy camper.
2)
Metamerism - the archival prints from the 2000P can take on color tints
(greenish) under differing light sources. You need to be aware of how
(e.g. what type of light) your fine art prints will be
viewed.
3) You
may have to mortgage your house and hock your kid to afford all of the ink and
paper if you do a lot of printing. There are other paper/ink solutions out
there (continuous inking systems from third parties), but these can make for
many, many headaches in profiling and getting the output you
want.
Good
luck,
Scott
