Going to a GEM from a fork mounted scope isn't a big
deal. The motions of the RA and Dec axes are less intuitive but after some
experience it becomes second nature. A GEM is easier to counterbalance,
which becomes important when attaching photographic accessories (camera,
T-adapter, off-axis guider). My first SCT was an 8" LX50, but I tired of
using the fork mount (tedious polar alignment, difficult to counterbalance,
difficulty viewing objects at high declinations), and replaced it with a C9.25
and G-11.
