Hi Rob,

Excellent results!

Did you ever try just blurring the RGB original a bit and increasing the 
color and saturation on it and then blending in the luminosity?

I've got a "sort of" similar technique that I developed a couple of years 
ago for film shots.

I'm going to detail it along with many other techniques in my book on 
Photoshop for Astrophotography which should be out in a couple of months.
