         my IBM thinkpad came with Win ME installed,a nd knock wood, it has 
been reasonably reliable.  However, Win ME will not "talk" to any Dos based 
external hardwware, whereas my desktops running win 98 and Win 95 will 
talk.  If your external hardware has updated Win 98 drivers, they *should* 
work, but even then, not always I ahve found.
