RE: [APML] Astrophotography Operating System

Unless you are buying a computer that comes pre-installed with Windows ME, I would suggest staying away from it. Windows ME is notoriously picky regarding hardware support. I have had far less problems with Win98 SE.

That being said, I think that Windows XP performs very well if you have a modern machine. It boots up faster than any other MS OS, has very good hardware support, supports all software I have thrown at it, and hasn't crashed on me yet. Of course, you have to decide if want to put up with the XP licensing policy, their passport system, and other poorly conceived ideas such as Smart Tags. Going beyond Win98 and ME may be worth considering as RAM is cheap these days and 2000 and XP can support more RAM (which is always useful in scanning negatives and processing astrophotos).

Subject: [APML] Astrophotography Operating System

Hello,

sorry for this probably OT-posting...

I am going to install a computer for a friend this week.

I heard some negative things about Windows Me which comes together with the computer.

Are there any issues with programs normally used for astrophotography running on Windows Me? (Photoshop, Sky Charting Software,...)
Should I stick to Windows 98SE which is my current plan?

with best regards

Philipp Salzgeber
