I think I am seeing less noise with the Vuescan RAW scan. I'm not sure
why except the software does set up exposure times for the scanner.

As for processing tricks I also use some of the techniques
you describe. I used feathered selections to drop images 
of the lagoon and trifid taken with the 16" and 6" into
the wide feild of the 12" Schmidt camera.
