I would definitely suspect the SCSI card too.  When I first got my SS 45 
Ultra it had problems with an old SCSI card (so old that I can't remember 
the model number).  The old card worked OK with the SS 35 Plus but with the 
much larger data transfers of the SS 4000 and SS 45 Ultra things like 
performance and buffering become much more important.  I changed to an 
Adaptec 2930U and it has been working fine ever since.  There seems to be a 
golden rule when it comes to high end scanners: always choose Adaptec.  It 
sounds like a monopolistic statement, but it seems to be true.  I believe 
that your problems will go away if you change to the Adaptec 2940.
