I usually use 0.5x for calibration/guiding on my GM-8.

With the STV, you should calibrate and guide at the same rate.
The STV has the aggressiveness parameter to work with.

I think you need to experiment with your mount, because each mount has subtle differences.
If the clutch is too loose, there will be slippage and possible misalignment.
If the clutch is too tight, it could also misalign the parts and cause binding.
John Boudreau could tell you more about this.

The majority of Losmandy mounts I know about need to have a slight amount of backlash in 
DEC.
If the DEC has no backlash, you usually get overshoot, which really screws up the guiding.
The TVC does a good job compensating for a slight amount of backlash, and you should use 
it.
I think Scott's "3-6" is what most people (including myself) use.

The RA can have even more backlash, as it never changes direction when guiding at 2x or 
0.5x.
