Warren,

I think 15 seconds is the minimum amount of time to reliably calibrate at 0.5x.  You've 
probably received all of these suggestions (or already done them), but anyway I hope this 
helps.  Make sure:

1. Balance very carefully, especially in DEC.  Weight RA heavier on the East side.
2. Tighten clutch knobs moderately.
3. Adjust backlash well.  Use a bit of TVC to take up backlash in DEC.
