Brian,

I'd say yes.  I have a Pentax 400/2.8 and have noticed some flexure with
long exposures (especially when the lens was positioned off center).  I
don't know if the Nikon is as massive as the Pentax (13 lb.) but it is too
much for the standard tripod mount.  I've added a pair of rings and this
works much better.
